KDE Releases Plasma 6.8 and Retires X11
KDE Marks 30 Years With Plasma 6.8 Release and X11 Retirement
Marking its 30th anniversary on October 14, software developer KDE released Plasma 6.8, debuted a movie, and retired Plasma’s native X11 session support.
The Tech TL;DR:
- Plasma 6.8 launches as the “30th Anniversary Edition,” dropping native X11 session support after 42 years of protocol service.
- Legacy X11 apps continue functioning via the XWayland compatibility layer under Wayland, matching a similar move by GNOME in 2025.
- New features include default Nvidia triple buffering, integrated Kup backup utilities, and the kscreenctl command-line utility.
Plasma 6.8 Replaces X11 Sessions with Wayland
After 42 years in service, the X11 protocol is losing another major desktop environment. Plasma has fully adopted the Wayland system and put support for starting new X11 sessions in Plasma to bed. Users opting to stay on Plasma 6.7 will keep their existing sessions for now. The move was expected, with GNOME officially dropping X11 sessions by default in 2025.
Legacy X11 applications will still function via the XWayland compatibility layer. KDE applications will also continue supporting X11 under other desktop environments.
New Features and Upgrades in the Anniversary Release
The company described the update as preparing Plasma for the future. The new Plasma 6.8 brings many improvements, including increased support for adding window decorations like shadows and rounded corners to third-party apps, alongside a more streamlined Union theming system.
Other notable additions include Nvidia triple buffering being enabled by default, Kup backup integration bringing KDE’s backup utility directly into Plasma, and kscreenctl, a command-line utility that allows power users to adjust display configurations.
