Kawhi Leonard Trade to Raptors Finally Official

September 15, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Kawhi Leonard is officially back with the Toronto Raptors following a prolonged offseason transaction delay that concluded in September 2026. According to TSN and Hoops Wire reporting, Toronto acquired Leonard from the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a pick swap in 2027, and second-round selections in 2030 and 2033.

The Resolution of a Long-Delayed Front Office Transaction

Seventy-six days after the trade was initially agreed to in principle, and 67 days after it hit a temporary pause, the deal became official just before 3:00 p.m. ET on a Monday in September 2026, as outlined by TSN. The transaction structure remained identical to the original agreement. The Raptors executed the precautionary trade hold in July to monitor the outcome of a year-long league salary-cap investigation involving the Clippers and Leonard. Once the league finalized its investigation, resulting in a $700,000 fine for Leonard, a $30 million fine for the Clippers, draft forfeiture, and executive suspensions, owner Steve Ballmer cleared the path for the trade by dropping a threatened legal challenge, according to Hoops Wire coverage.

Contractual Landscape and Roster Integration

Leonard enters the final year of his contract carrying a $50.3 million salary, having waived his entire 15 percent trade kicker to facilitate the move to Toronto, per Hoops Wire reporting. Industry reports indicate he could sign a two-year extension worth up to $126 million. Last season, Leonard recorded a career-high 27.9 points per game, earning All-NBA Second Team and All-Defensive Second Team honors.

Franchise Impact and Future Asset Management

Raptors general manager Bobby Webster addressed the acquisition in the team’s official press release, stating, We’re thrilled to welcome Kawhi Leonard back to Toronto. Our franchise, our municipality, and our nation have all felt his undeniable presence, and he truly exemplifies the competitive drive and winning attitude that we hold dear. We are confident that his talent, background, and guidance will assist us as we push forward toward securing our next title. While Toronto integrates its newly acquired Finals MVP—who previously led the franchise to its 2019 title—the Clippers pivot toward a rebuilding phase utilizing the future draft capital conveyed in the deal.
