Žalgiris Coach Pavlovich Confident ahead of Arda Kardzhali Clash
KAUNAS, Lithuania – Žalgiris Kaunas head coach Damyan Pavlovich expressed optimism and a focus on aggressive play as his team prepares to face Bulgarian side Arda Kardzhali in the second leg of the UEFA Europa Conference League second qualifying round. The match is scheduled for tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. at the Darius and girėnas Stadium in Kaunas.
Pavlovich emphasized the teamS growth, stating,”I think we grow up as a team,as a big family. Its different from the A league – we see different styles and characters in the game, so we feel improved.Even though we’ve overcome two stages, we remain modest and travel further step by step.”
Regarding potential tactics from Arda Kardzhali, Pavlovich anticipates a proactive approach. “It’s hard to say how they will decide to play with us, but our analysis suggests they won’t wait for the second match. We expect aggressive pressure and a lot of ball game,” he stated.
Acknowledging the demanding schedule – “We play a lot, about every 3-4 days, making it difficult for the same 11 players to feature in every match” – Pavlovich praised the team’s depth and rotation. He affirmed confidence in his squad’s physical condition and respect for Arda Kardzhali, but underscored the team’s determination to secure a victory. “We respect them as a team, but not too much as we have to win this match. We know they are big and strong, but that doesn’t change our style of play.”
Pavlovich and the team members also expressed delight at the growing fan support. “It’s always fun to have a big crowd that grows steadily because we win a lot of matches,” Pavlovich noted. He highlighted the importance of fan engagement for the team, the club, and the city of Kaunas, especially with fans traveling to support Žalgiris in away matches.
He specifically acknowledged the “Green White Boys” supporters group and reported that Žalgiris fans had organized a dedicated section at the away match in Iceland, connecting with local Lithuanians to create a strong atmosphere. “The fact that they come to our match makes the atmosphere even better, and for players, it is a great moment to show up and bring joy to those who came to see them,” he added.
Žalgiris Kaunas currently competes in the A Lyga, the top tier of Lithuanian football. Arda Kardzhali plays in the First Professional Football League, the highest level of Bulgarian football. The winner of this two-legged tie will advance to the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa Conference League.
