Kaufland Pulls Sparkling‌ Water Amid Deposit System Controversy

Warsaw, Poland – October 2, ⁣2024, 18:00 CEST – Retailer Kaufland has temporarily removed a⁢ popular brand ‌of sparkling ⁤water, “Źródlana,” ‌from its shelves following consumer confusion⁤ and ⁤criticism ‌surrounding Poland’s newly‍ implemented‍ deposit system ‌for beverage containers. The move comes as shoppers report difficulties returning bottles purchased before the deposit system went into effect on October 1, 2024,‍ and concerns over bottles lacking clear “deposit” markings and amounts.

The controversy centers⁢ on the application of the new system to existing stock. While the ‌deposit system aims to incentivize recycling and ⁢reduce litter, consumers‍ are finding themselves in a gray area with older products. Reports indicate that some stores ⁤are refusing to accept returns on bottles without the new‌ deposit inscription, leaving customers unable to recoup the 50 ⁢groszy (approximately €0.12) deposit⁣ per container.the situation has sparked debate online and ‌raised ⁢questions about⁣ the clarity of the system’s rollout.

Poland’s deposit system, mandated by the European Union’s Single-Use Plastics Directive, requires a deposit on most plastic, glass, and aluminum ‍beverage containers. The system is managed by a consortium of beverage producers and retailers, and ‌aims to achieve⁤ a 90% collection rate for these containers by 2029.

Kaufland confirmed its decision⁤ to pull “Źródlana” was a ‍precautionary ⁢measure to avoid further customer frustration. A company‍ spokesperson‌ stated they are working ⁤with the beverage producer‌ to ensure⁢ all future products clearly display the required deposit details. The retailer expects the product to return to shelves once the issue is resolved.
