Kate O’Flynn on Her Breakout Role in Widow’s Bay and First Time in Los Angeles
First-time Emmy nominee Kate O’Flynn stars as Patricia in the Apple TV horror-comedy series Widow’s Bay, balancing deadpan comedy with raw terror on a cursed New England island. Before landing the role, the British actress had never even visited Los Angeles, stepping into a fairy-tale trajectory.
Stepping Into the Cursed World of Widow’s Bay
Superstitions run deep in the human psyche, a reality that forms the thematic bedrock of Widow’s Bay. According to interviews with Esquire, Kate O’Flynn grew up with her own share of traditional habits, noting that she used to salute magpies and watched her grandmother spit on the floor if a bird managed to fly indoors. That underlying appreciation for folklore made stepping into a town plagued by hauntings a natural fit.
Created by Katie Dippold, the Apple TV series follows a quaint coastal New England community attempting to rebrand itself as the next Martha’s Vineyard despite ongoing supernatural threats. Matthew Rhys leads the cast as Tom Lofits, the skeptical town mayor, while O’Flynn plays Patricia, his offbeat assistant. Alongside the town’s believer Wyck, played by Stephen Root, the trio works to uncover the source of the island’s curse.
For O’Flynn, who previously earned a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for her stage work in The Glass Menagerie on London’s West End, the character of Patricia arrived with crystal clarity. “Patricia really came very clearly to me,” O’Flynn told Esquire. “I could see her when I auditioned for it, and it was a no-brainer.”
Nailing the Dialect and Feral Action Sequences
Portraying a New England local required preparation for the British performer. To capture the regional cadence, O’Flynn listened to podcasts hosted by Amy Poehler and Rachel Dratch, working alongside dialect coach Carter Bellamy. People can’t believe that both O’Flynn and her Welsh co-star Matthew Rhys are not from there.
The physical demands of the role reached a fever pitch in Episode 8, titled “Your Baggage” and written by Emma Ketchum with direction by Andrew DeYoung. Following a Sunset Cocktails party gone wrong, Patricia’s quiet night of chicken parm, coconut cream pie, and Enya was interrupted by the return of the Boogeyman, the masked killer who terrorized her in her youth. Stranded at home with a drained taser, O’Flynn spent the episode sprinting through slasher-film sequences.
Director Andrew DeYoung established the frantic tone on set by shouting “FERAL, KATE!” right before rolling camera, as O’Flynn explained to Decider. Costume designer Alex Bovaird outfitted her for the chase in an oversized bed shirt, bike shorts, and specially secured slipper socks. “I really didn’t want to roll over my ankle,” O’Flynn told Decider regarding the footwear choice. “So [costume designer Alex Bovaird] found these slipper socks… and put elastic around so they wouldn’t fall off.”
