Karen Eubanks Jackson: Leading the Fight Against Breast Cancer in Black Women | EBONY
Karen Eubanks Jackson, a 31-year breast cancer survivor, addressed attendees at the EBONY SHE IS Brunch on Thursday, February 26, 2026, offering insights into purpose-driven leadership and the ongoing fight for Black women’s health equity. The event, sponsored by Novartis, featured a donation from EBONY Owner and CEO Eden Bridgeman Sklenar to Jackson’s organization, Sisters Network Inc., signaling a commitment to systemic change in breast cancer advocacy.
Jackson founded Sisters Network Inc. In 1994, driven by her own experiences and a recognition of the lack of support systems for Black women facing breast cancer, coupled with disproportionately high mortality rates within the community. According to Sisters Network Inc.’s website, Jackson is recognized as a pioneer and leader in the national Black breast cancer movement. She identified a critical gap in culturally sensitive resources and a pervasive silence surrounding the disease within the Black community.
The brunch, guided by Michelle Marsh, included testimonies from breast cancer panelists Angel Everett and Tiara Neal, offering raw and personal accounts of their journeys. DJ Kurtis Cross provided a soundtrack intended to underscore the event’s themes of resilience, and hope. The gathering underscored the importance of community and unity in addressing health disparities.
Sisters Network Inc. Has grown under Jackson’s leadership to become the oldest and largest national Black breast cancer survivorship organization, boasting over 25 survivor-run affiliate chapters across the United States. The organization’s impact extends beyond support groups, encompassing national educational outreach programs, survivor and family support services, and financial assistance. Jackson launched the “STOP THE SILENCE ®” campaign to encourage open conversations about family health history, acknowledging the historical reluctance within the Black community to discuss health concerns.
The organization’s work is particularly crucial given the continued disparities in breast cancer outcomes. According to information on the Sisters Network Inc. Website, Black women continue to die at alarming rates compared to white women. Jackson’s memoir, In the Company of My Sisters, “My Story, My Truth,” details her personal battle with breast cancer and serves as an inspiration for others.
Jackson’s recognition at the EBONY SHE IS Brunch, as reported by EBONY, highlights her ongoing influence and the growing momentum behind Sisters Network Inc.’s mission. The donation from EBONY represents a significant investment in the organization’s efforts to address systemic inequities and improve outcomes for Black women facing breast cancer. The future direction of Sisters Network Inc. And its continued expansion remain key to addressing the ongoing health crisis.
