KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Kansas City area voters are expressing strong opposition to proposed congressional redistricting plans,fearing the changes will diminish their representation and voting power. KCTV5 spoke wiht over 20 residents across the city who voiced concerns that the potential redrawing of district lines feels like a manipulation of their rights.
John Washington, a Raytown resident of nearly 20 years, stated, “We are killing each other by the way they’re doing it right now. they wanna come into the city and run it.” He worries his vote will hold less weight and questions whether a new representative will adequately address the needs of the community. “It’s the peopel who have to pull this together,” Washington said.”We can’t let the government run us.”
Theresa Stringer, who has lived in Independence for almost 30 years, questioned the motivation behind the proposed changes. “How does it benefit us? I mean if it’s not benefiting us why are they changing it. Who is it benefiting?” she asked.
Voters interviewed, including supporters of both Rep. Mark Alford and Rep.Emmanuel Cleaver, universally expressed disapproval of the potential redistricting, describing it as an infringement on their voting rights.
the proposed changes are prompting legal challenges, with Missouri lawmakers and congressional leaders preparing for a potential battle that could reach the Supreme Court.
