Harry Kane scored twice in the opening 25 minutes as Bayern Munich defeated Werder Bremen 3-0 on the road, re-establishing a six-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga table. The victory came after Borussia Dortmund’s 4-0 win over Mainz on Friday, putting pressure on Bayern to respond.
Kane opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, converting a penalty awarded after Lennart Karl was fouled in the Bremen penalty area. Just three minutes later, he doubled Bayern’s advantage, capitalizing on an opportunity created by Karl’s skillful run and subsequent challenge. According to the BBC, the goals marked Kane’s 400th in club football, achieved over 14 years and nine months since his first professional goal for Leyton Orient in 2011.
Werder Bremen struggled to contain Bayern’s attack, and their own offensive efforts yielded limited success. Romano Schmid was Bremen’s primary attacking threat, registering three shots and creating chances for his teammates, accounting for 0.54 of the team’s 0.98 xG, according to SofaScore. While, Bremen has managed only one goal in their last five matches, highlighting their ongoing struggles in front of goal.
Bayern extended their lead in the 70th minute through Leon Goretzka. The goal arrived after a simultaneous substitution saw Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies enter the game, injecting fresh energy into Bayern’s midfield. Goretzka’s performance was particularly noteworthy, exceeding Joshua Kimmich’s passing accuracy (97%) and demonstrating greater defensive pressure with five interceptions.
Defensively, Bayern secured their first consecutive clean sheet since October, largely thanks to the performance of Kim Min-jae. Kim recorded five clearances, three recoveries, two interceptions, and a blocked shot. His form has returned to the level displayed before a previous Achilles injury, providing Vincent Kompany with a reliable option in central defense alongside a rotation of players including Hiroki Itō.
While Karl earned praise for drawing the penalty and showcasing his quick movements, his impact faded after the opening half-hour. The introduction of Musiala further emphasized the difference in sustained performance, though Musiala did not manage to find the back of the net himself. The performance of Serge Gnabry, however, was criticized as being subpar, despite recently signing a two-year contract extension.
Kane’s two goals bring his season tally to 12 Bundesliga goals, and he is now on pace to challenge Robert Lewandowski’s single-season record of 41 goals. He is also closing in on Paul Breitner’s record of 10 penalty conversions in a single Bundesliga season, having already converted nine this campaign.
