IMM UM Thursday Focal Discussion Highlights K3 Culture and Disaster Preparedness
on Thursday, August 29, 2024, the IMM UM (Islamic Student Association of Muhammadiyah University of Surabaya) held a focal Discussion via Zoom Meeting, beginning at 7:30 PM WIB. The event drew 35 participants from the IMM UM extended family and the Batu City Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center (MDMC) team.
The interactive session featured moderator Ashhab Mubarok and two speakers: Ayunda Nadiya Istighfara and Arief nur Rahman. Ayunda Nadiya Istighfara focused on the importance of integrating Occupational Health and Safety (K3) culture into daily life, while Arief Nur Rahman emphasized disaster preparedness through the Disaster Safe Education Unit (SPAB) program.
A central theme of the discussion, as highlighted by ayunda Nadiya Istighfara (known as Mbak Farah), was the disconnect between K3 knowledge and its practical submission. ”Even people with good K3 knowledge do not necessarily apply it correctly, because we often underestimate small things that have the potential to be a disaster,” she stated. Mbak Farah urged participants to cultivate K3 as a pervasive culture, extending beyond workplace procedures to encompass homes and communities as a shared duty.
arief Nur Rahman underscored Indonesia’s vulnerability to a wide range of disasters, stating, “Indonesia can be called a disaster laboratory. All types of disasters have occurred in our country. Thus, teaching children about disaster mitigation from an early age is very vital.” He advocated for the SPAB program to transform schools and campuses into learning spaces for disaster preparedness, equipping the younger generation with the necessary awareness and skills.
The discussion also addressed the recent collapse of a boarding school building in Sidoarjo, prompting participants to critically examine building safety oversight, adherence to K3 construction standards, and the accountability of educational institutions in safeguarding student lives.
The event concluded with a call to action: disaster risk awareness should be ingrained within organizational culture, education, and daily life, rather than being reactive to specific events. The IMM UM Thursday Focal Discussion aimed to foster a proactive approach to safety and preparedness within the community.
