Jurong Fire: 150 Evacuated from Teban Gardens Block, Likely Electrical Origin

February 18, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Approximately 150 residents were evacuated from a Housing & Development Board (HDB) block in Teban Gardens, Jurong, on the afternoon of February 17, 2026, following a fire on the 11th floor. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) responded to the incident at Block 34 Teban Gardens Road at around 4:20 PM, according to official statements.

Firefighters gained entry to the unit, which was filled with smoke and extinguished the blaze using a water jet. The SCDF confirmed the fire was contained to the living room and that no occupants were present in the unit at the time of the incident. As a precaution, police and SCDF personnel facilitated the evacuation of residents from the block.

Preliminary investigations conducted by the SCDF indicate the fire was likely caused by an electrical fault originating in the living room. The SCDF has reiterated public safety reminders regarding fire prevention, emphasizing the importance of maintaining electrical systems and avoiding overloaded sockets.

Ms. Cassandra Lee, a Member of Parliament representing West Coast-Jurong West GRC, provided updates via Facebook. On February 18, she stated that the SCDF had assessed the structural integrity of the building and deemed surrounding units safe for re-entry. HDB engineers subsequently conducted structural checks, confirming the building’s stability.

Arrangements were made to provide temporary accommodation for the affected family. Whereas the family initially preferred to stay with relatives, they are scheduled to receive the keys to a temporary HDB flat on February 19, with assistance being provided to facilitate the transition, according to Ms. Lee’s Facebook posts.

The incident occurred amidst a reported increase in the overall number of fires in Singapore. Annual statistics released by the SCDF earlier in February revealed a 3 percent rise in total fire cases, increasing from 1,990 in 2025 to 2,050. Residential fires accounted for 1,051 of these incidents. Unattended cooking and electrical malfunctions remain the primary causes of fires in homes.
