Juno on Medium – Stories & Updates | Medium Writer Profile

March 19, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

The Pakistani rock band Junoon, formed in Lahore in 1990, has seen a sustained career spanning decades, achieving significant commercial success with over 30 million albums sold worldwide. The band’s origins trace back to Tappan, New York, where songwriter and guitarist Salman Ahmad first became inspired by rock music, forming a band called “Eclipse” with Brian O’Connell.

Junoon released its debut self-titled album in September 1992, produced by Salman Ahmad and distributed by EMI. The album featured twelve tracks, with eight in Urdu, three in English, and one instrumental piece. Vocal duties were primarily handled by Ali Azmat, with Nusrat Hussain contributing vocals to “Khwab” and “Jiyain,” and Fifi Haroon featured on “Jogia.” Bass guitar on all tracks was performed by session musician Asad Ahmed. The album’s release was uniquely tied to a promotional campaign with Colgate, where it was distributed free with purchases of Colgate toothpaste in Pakistan.

The band gained prominence in Pakistan with the 1993 single “Talaash” and the subsequent album, but achieved international recognition with the releases of Inquilaab (1996), Azadi (1997), and Parvaaz (1999). Azadi sold over half a million copies and achieved platinum status within four weeks. The album’s lead single, “Sayonee” (1997), topped charts across South Asia and the Middle East, remaining at number one on Channel V and MTV Asia for over two months. “Yaar Bina” was the second single released from the album.

Personnel changes have marked Junoon’s history. In 2003, bassist Brian O’Connell left the band to return to the United States. Since then, Pakistani musician Mekaal Hasan and producer John Alec have filled the bass guitar role for live performances. Vocalist Ali Azmat departed in 2005 to pursue a solo career, having released two studio albums. Salman Ahmad also embarked on a solo career, releasing his debut album, Infiniti, in July 2005.

Junoon maintains an official presence on YouTube, with a channel established as junoonofficial. As of today, the channel has no recent activity.
