Judge’s Bribery Case: Arrest Warrant Denied Over Insufficient Evidence

March 24, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

A South Korean judge has been spared arrest despite accusations of receiving bribes in exchange for lenient sentencing in cases involving a former high school classmate. The Seoul Central District Court on Saturday denied a request from the anti-corruption investigation agency to detain Judge Kim, whose full name has not been publicly released, citing insufficient evidence of illicit funds changing hands.

Judge Kim, currently serving at the Jeonju District Court, stands accused of accepting approximately 3.7 million won (roughly $2,700 USD) in gifts – including cash, a baby gift for his son, and perfume for his wife – from lawyer Jeong, a fellow alumnus of their high school. In return, prosecutors allege that Judge Kim handed down lighter sentences in over 20 cases brought by Jeong between 2023, and 2025. The accusations too extend to the alleged free apply of a building owned by a company with Jeong as a shareholder for the operation of Judge Kim’s wife’s violin instruction studio.

The total value of the alleged benefits, including the uncompensated use of the building, is estimated to be in the tens of millions of won. During questioning, Judge Kim reportedly denied any quid pro quo arrangement, asserting that the gifts were not connected to his rulings. He released a statement through his legal counsel prior to the hearing, expressing “deep regret” over what he characterized as a “hasty and unlawful” investigation by the anti-corruption agency.

The court’s decision to reject the arrest warrant for both Judge Kim and lawyer Jeong was based on the determination that the prosecution had not adequately demonstrated the transfer of funds or a clear link between the gifts and the sentencing outcomes. The case has sent shockwaves through the South Korean legal community, raising concerns about potential corruption within the judiciary. The anti-corruption agency has not yet announced whether it will appeal the court’s decision or pursue further investigation into the allegations.

The investigation began following a complaint alleging a pattern of favorable rulings in cases handled by Jeong, coinciding with gifts received by Judge Kim. Reports indicate that Judge Kim’s wife had attempted to secure a permit to operate the violin studio in the building provided by Jeong’s company, but the application was ultimately denied due to zoning regulations.
