Canadiens Prospect Joshua Roy Transforms Physique, Eyes Training Camp Battle
MONTREAL – Montreal Canadiens prospect Joshua Roy has undergone a dramatic physical conversion this summer, shedding 14 pounds and significantly increasing his strength, according to reports. The 20-year-old forward, previously weighing 204 pounds, now tips the scales at 190, and is demonstrating a marked improvement in his physical capabilities.
Roy’s dedication to fitness is notably noteworthy given previous perceptions. While some might have anticipated a typical off-season for a young player, Roy committed to a rigorous diet and training regimen, silencing rumors and exceeding expectations of his coaching staff. This physical evolution comes at a crucial juncture as Roy prepares to compete for a roster spot at the upcoming Canadiens training camp, facing stiff competition from fellow prospects Florian Xhekaj, Oliver Kapanen, and Owen Beck.
Roy struggled wiht basic pull-ups at the beginning of the summer, managing only three repetitions with difficulty. Now, he’s able to perform the exercise while supporting an additional 35 pounds. “He had the misery of doing three in a row, and they were not good pull-ups. Now he can do it by attaching 35 pounds around his size. It is considerable as progress,” said strength and conditioning coach Nicolas Chaimberg.
The key to Roy’s success has been a focused nutritional approach. “Lots of protein, not a lot of lipids,” Roy explained. “Really limit carbohydrates as much as possible. I closely followed the portions. It helped me a lot in my weight loss.”
Chaimberg, who initially held preconceived notions about Roy’s dedication, was impressed by his consistent work ethic. “I had never seen it in a gym, I only heard gossip,” Chaimberg admitted. ”And then he pointed out every day, so that I had to force him to take two leave this summer. He never complains. He surpass himself in every exercise I give him. Never say that he is not able to do it.”
Roy’s focus extends beyond physical gains. He understands the need to combine his offensive skills with improved skating ability. “I am someone with a lot of offensive and that’s what they want to see of me,” Roy stated. “I’ll get ready.” The Canadiens organization has repeatedly emphasized the importance of Roy’s “pace” or game rhythm, and his summer work suggests he’s prepared to deliver.
