José María Sáenz Valiente: Renowned Argentine Corporate Lawyer Dies at 76

José María Sáenz Valiente, a prominent Argentine lawyer specializing in corporate law and the head of the law firm Sáenz Valiente & Asociados, died Monday at the age of 76, leaving a significant mark on the legal and business sectors of Argentina.

Born on February 26, 1949, Sáenz Valiente was a third-generation lawyer, continuing a legal tradition spanning over a century, initiated by his grandfather and further developed by his father, known as “Pepén.” According to reports, the firm’s early focus on civil, commercial, and corporate law was broadened by his father to include the legal and constitutional protection of press freedom, a commitment stemming from a professional relationship with the newspaper Clarín dating back to the 1970s.

Sáenz Valiente further expanded the firm’s practice areas, concentrating on corporate structures, mergers and acquisitions, contract law, intellectual property rights, and corporate governance, with a particular emphasis on the media and telecommunications industries. He played a key role in the legal structuring of Grupo Clarín, one of Argentina’s largest media conglomerates.

Colleagues and peers recognized Sáenz Valiente for his technical expertise, strategic vision, and dedication to mentoring younger lawyers. Those who worked alongside him highlighted his creative passion, rigorous work ethic, and willingness to engage in debate. Sáenz Valiente was married to Claudia García Hamilton, and together they had six children: Ignacio, Mariana, Agustín, Luz, Santiago, and María. He was a member of the Jockey Club and the Club Náutico San Isidro, and enjoyed playing golf.
