Jorge Kahwagi: La Crónica de Hoy President Dies at 85
Jorge Kahwagi Gastine, president of the Mexican daily La Crónica de Hoy, died Monday at the age of 85, the newspaper announced. His passing has drawn condolences from across the political spectrum in Mexico.
Kahwagi Gastine had led La Crónica de Hoy since 2000. Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas, the national leader of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), expressed his sorrow on social media, stating Kahwagi Gastine “was a man who built, participated, and left his mark on the media and public life of Mexico.” Moreno Cárdenas extended his solidarity to Kahwagi Gastine’s family and friends, wishing them strength during this tough time.
A graduate of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) with a law degree, Kahwagi Gastine also held a doctorate in Public Administration with a specialization in High Business Management from the Panamerican University. He was actively involved with educational institutions, serving on the board of trustees of the National College of Professional Technical Education, the governing board of the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute, and the Mexican Bar Association.
The news of Kahwagi Gastine’s death comes as the PRI, led by Moreno Cárdenas, is actively seeking to strengthen its political position. Earlier this month, Moreno Cárdenas called for unity among opposition parties – the PRI, the National Action Party (PAN), and the Citizen Movement – ahead of the 2027 elections, warning that a fragmented vote would benefit the ruling Morena party.
On the same day as Kahwagi Gastine’s death, reports surfaced regarding allegations that the Federal Audit Superiority (ASF) may have forgiven up to 98% of observed financial discrepancies, a matter that has drawn scrutiny and commentary on social media.
