Jorge Chemes, a prominent figure in Argentina’s agricultural sector and former president of Confederaciones Rurales Argentinas (CRA), died Sunday at the age of 64, according to statements released by CRA and other agricultural organizations.

Chemes, who also served as a national deputy representing the UCR party for Entre Ríos province, passed away at his home, though the specific cause of death was reported as a cardiorespiratory arrest, according to Clarín. CRA expressed its deep sorrow, describing Chemes as an “impeccable union leader” and a key figure in the service of Argentine agriculture.

Throughout his career, Chemes held numerous leadership positions within the agricultural community. He served as president of the Sociedad Rural de Nogoyá, secretary of the Cámara de Productores Lácteos de Entre Ríos, and a regional representative for CREA Litoral Sur. He also founded and led CREA Nogoyá, and for two terms presided over the Federación de Asociaciones Rurales de Entre Ríos (Farer), as reported by La Nación.

Chemes gained national prominence for his role in the 2009 agricultural conflict over Resolution 125, which led to his election as a national deputy. During his time in Congress, he championed legislation aimed at defending the agricultural sector and participated in relevant parliamentary committees. He was later unanimously elected president of CRA after serving two consecutive terms as first vice president.

Beyond his roles within CRA and Farer, Chemes coordinated the Mesa de Lechería, a forum bringing together representatives from across the dairy production chain. The Sociedad Rural de Rosario, in a statement, highlighted Chemes’ dedication to strengthening agricultural institutions and fostering dialogue between producers, organizations, and government authorities.

Rogelio Frigerio, the governor of Entre Ríos, expressed his sadness at Chemes’ passing on X, praising his warmth, loyalty, and commitment to improving the province. Nicolás Pino, president of the Sociedad Rural Argentina (SRA), also mourned Chemes as a “great reference” for the agricultural sector, emphasizing his firm convictions and unwavering commitment.

The SRA noted Chemes’ dedication to defending agricultural producers, strengthening institutions, and promoting the federal development of the country. CRA stated that his “commitment and legacy will serve as an example for future generations.”
