Joran Wyseure claims first cyclo-cross win at Heerderstrand
Crelan-Corendon rider Joran Wyseure secured his first victory of the cyclo-cross season by defeating Joris Nieuwenhuis by a margin of seven seconds at the HG Cross Heerderstrand in the Netherlands. The race concluded with a total winning time of 1:00:05 over a demanding nine-lap lakeside course featuring heavy sand, damp grass, and technical headwinds.
Start Grid Confusion Shapes the Opening Laps
The race dynamic fractured before the field even reached the initial sand section. Competitors including Joran Wyseure, Felipe Orts, Laurens Sweeck, and Pim Ronhaart hesitated under the assumption of a false start while the rest of the field accelerated away.
That initial grid hesitation dropped Wyseure back to roughly 25th position as the race entered its first circuits. While Heizomat-Cube rider Joris Nieuwenhuis and Alpecin-Tech’s Niels Vandeputte avoided the early traffic jam and pushed immediately into the front group, Wyseure and Spain’s Felipe Orts had to expend significant energy chasing down the leaders across the opening four laps. By the end of the fourth circuit, six riders—Nieuwenhuis, Vandeputte, Orts, Mees Hendrikx, 18-year-old Giel Lejeune, and a recovering Wyseure—redefined the front selection.
Tactical Sand Lines Decide the Podium Positions
As the sun and wind dried out portions of the course, racers experimented with distinct racing lines through the deep sand. Competitors weighed a shorter inside line against a longer, more compacted outer line near the water’s edge. Giel Lejeune seized the initiative during the sixth lap, pushing past Nieuwenhuis to take the front before the leaders regrouped.
During the seventh lap, Wyseure initiated a decisive pace acceleration that dropped Mees Hendrikx off the lead group. Entering the final lap, only Wyseure and Nieuwenhuis remained locked at the front. Wyseure committed fully to the longer, wet sand line close to the water, generating the traction needed to pull clear of Nieuwenhuis by a few crucial seconds. He crossed the finish line in 1:00:05, seven seconds ahead of Nieuwenhuis.

| Position | Rider | Team | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Joran Wyseure (Bel) | Crelan-Corendon | 1:00:05 |
| 5 | Giel Lejeune (Bel) | Alpecin-Premier Tech | 1:00:34 |
Defending champion Niels Vandeputte secured third place, finishing 16 seconds behind the winner, followed by Felipe Orts in fourth and Giel Lejeune in fifth. I think every win is special, and it’s a nice circuit here.
I think it was a nice battle also with Joran and Niels, and I’m really happy I could make it off.
