Jonathan Cahn attacked by passenger on flight to Newark
Author and Messianic Rabbi Jonathan Cahn survived a physical attack by a fellow passenger aboard a flight from Dallas to Newark on September 3. Arthur Lundeen, 67, of Tucson, Arizona, allegedly shifted from friendly conversation to strangulation and screaming that the plane would crash after seeing the cover of Cahn’s new book, The Altar of Pergamon, forcing an emergency landing in Baltimore.
The In-Flight Shift From Normal Conversation to Sudden Violence
For the first two hours of the flight, Jonathan Cahn and Arthur Lundeen sat side-by-side and conversed normally. According to Cahn’s account on the Today with Paul Wilbur podcast, Lundeen appeared entirely friendly until a specific moment in the journey. Cahn described the shift as instantaneous, stating that the man changed from light to dark in a split second, as if something had taken him over.
The turning point occurred when Cahn began speaking about the power of God and showed Lundeen the cover of his newly released book, The Altar of Pergamon, which exposes Satan and his schemes. Cahn recalled experiencing a spiritual battle as much as a physical one at 30,000 feet, involving cursing, threats, and a struggle over his laptop.
Intervention and Emergency Landing in Baltimore
As the assault escalated, passenger Richard Olenick and another unidentified traveler stepped in to stop the attack. Olenick stated that Lundeen had his hands around another passenger’s throat in the process of strangulation. According to Olenick, Lundeen shouted that the plane was going to crash and that everyone was going to die, making a specific reference to Jesus during the tirade.
The severity of the incident forced an emergency landing in Baltimore. Federal authorities took custody of Lundeen upon arrival, and news of a disruptive passenger duct-taped to his airplane seat circulated globally following the September 3rd event.
Legal Proceedings and Defendant Memory Loss Claims
Following his arrest, Arthur Lundeen appeared before a Maryland judge to face charges related to the in-flight disturbance. During court proceedings, Lundeen stated that he has no memory of the event. He remarked to the judge that he could remember looking at the person next to him and talking, but retained no recollection of the landing or the violent altercation that took place.
Spiritual Reflections and Ongoing Book Release
Despite the harrowing nature of the attack, Jonathan Cahn framed the event around themes of faith and resilience, drawing parallels to Ephesians 6 regarding wrestling against spiritual forces. Alongside co-hosts Paul Wilbur and Shae Wilbur on Airwave Studios, Cahn detailed how the incident unfolded during the release week of The Altar of Pergamon. Cahn maintains that what the adversary intended for harm ultimately opened doors to discuss matters of faith with global audiences.
