A photograph posted jointly on Instagram by actors Jonathan Bailey and Ariana Grande has confirmed the pair will star in a West End revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George, scheduled to begin performances in summer 2027 at London’s Barbican Centre.
The image, depicting Bailey and Grande seated before Georges Seurat’s painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte – the inspiration for Sondheim and James Lapine’s Pulitzer Prize-winning musical – was accompanied by a caption from Bailey quoting a key line from the demonstrate: “All it has to be is solid.” The post quickly garnered reactions from entertainment industry figures, including actors Joe Locke and Lea Salonga.
The production will be directed by Marianne Elliott, and will feature costume design by Tom Scutt, according to reports. The revival marks the latest collaboration between Bailey and Grande, who previously starred together in the film adaptations of Wicked, with the second installment released in cinemas last year.
News of the project follows speculation that began late last year, suggesting the duo would reunite on stage. Tickets are expected to go on sale in May 2026. The original production of Sunday in the Park with George premiered off-Broadway in 1983, and subsequently moved to Broadway in 1984, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1985 and two Tony Awards.
