John Stamos Lands Role as King Herod in ‘Jesus Christ Superstar

john Stamos is set to portray King Herod in the upcoming Hollywood Bowl production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s “Jesus Christ Superstar.” stamos shared his excitement on Instagram, noting the tight turnaround after returning from a Beach Boys tour in Spain.”For the chance to step into the gold lamé,” he wrote, “This is an honor. A dream. And also a little insane as… I just stepped off a plane from @thebeachboys tour in Spain and have less than 24 hours to pull this off.”

The role of King Herod has a notable history in productions of “Jesus Christ Superstar.” Paul Ainsley originated the part in the 1971 Broadway premiere, followed by Josh Mostel in the 1973 film adaptation.More recently, Alice Cooper took on the role in NBC’s 2018 live concert staging.

The Hollywood Bowl production,scheduled for August 1-3,features a star-studded cast. Cynthia Erivo was announced in February to play the titular role of Jesus. Adam Lambert will portray Judas, with Milo Manheim and raúl esparza cast as Peter and Pontius Pilate, respectively. Phillipa Soo is slated to play Mary Magdalene.

The staging at the hollywood Bowl is under the direction and choreography of Tony winner David Trujillo. Stephen oremus, who contributed to both the Broadway and film versions of “Wicked,” will serve as conductor and music director. Neil Meron and Robert Greenblatt are producing the show in association.
