John Farnham Tribute Concert to Broadcast Live in Australian Cinemas

September 4, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

On Sunday, September 20, Australian music icon John Farnham will be celebrated through a massive, sold-out all-star concert at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena, which is expanding its reach via a live cinema broadcast across the HOYTS network nationwide, according to show producers Cochrane Entertainment and TEG Dainty.

Bringing a Sold-Out Arena to National Cinemas

The milestone event, titled The Songs of John Farnham: A Living Legend – The Celebration Concert, quickly exhausted its initial ticket allocation at the 15,000-capacity Rod Laver Arena. To accommodate overwhelming public demand, producers Tony Cochrane, Thea Jeanes-Cochrane, and Paul Dainty partnered with HOYTS to stream the entire evening live on the big screen.

According to HOYTS Group general manager of programming and content Michelle Gater, the initiative offers a communal viewing experience that stretches far beyond a standard recording playback. Audiences across the country will share every performance simultaneously with the crowd in Melbourne, generating an inclusive atmosphere for fans who missed out on primary tickets.

An Unprecedented Lineup of Local and International Talent

The September 20 production features more than 120 artists and musicians under the musical direction of Chong Lim, who serves as Farnham’s longtime musical director. The roster boasts high-profile names including Keith Urban, Tina Arena, Jimmy Barnes, Kate Ceberano, Ross Wilson, Human Nature, Richard Marx, Jessica Mauboy, and Jon Stevens, alongside remote satellite performances from Celine Dion and Hugh Jackman.

Additional performers announced for the staging include Vanessa Amorosi, Mahalia Barnes, Diesel, Rob Farnham, Dannielle Gaha, Hans, Jack Jones, Ruby Rodgers, Mitch Tambo, and Mark Vincent. Each artist was personally invited by Farnham to take part in the tribute.

The concert event also serves a charitable purpose, raising essential funds for Head and Neck Cancer Australia. This mission underscores the personal health challenges Farnham faced in August 2022, when he underwent major surgery to remove a cancerous growth from his mouth—a battle that kept him away from the public eye until rare appearances, including a 2024 audiobook memoir release.

Deep Roots at Rod Laver Arena and the Legacy of Whispering Jack

Farnham holds a record-breaking connection with Melbourne’s premier venue. According to event organizers, the veteran singer has performed at the Olympic Park location on 94 distinct occasions, entertaining more than one million total fans over the course of his career.

The celebration coincides with significant milestones in Farnham’s discography. Released via Sony Music in 1986, his landmark album Whispering Jack spent 25 weeks at No. 1 and shifted over one million copies, establishing itself as the highest-selling local album in Australian history. The release propelled his signature track, “You’re The Voice,” into an enduring national anthem.

To mark the album’s 40th anniversary, has seen the rollout of an expanded edition combining the original LP with Whispering Jack Live In Concert, alongside new numbered vinyl pressings and dedicated merchandise lines.

As the September 20 broadcast approaches, the collaboration between Cochrane Entertainment, TEG Dainty, and HOYTS stands as a unique moment in Australian entertainment history, capturing a community rallying around one of its most cherished performers.
