John Cena Won the Role of Peacemaker After Dave Bautista Turned It Down for Bigger Pay
Dave Bautista walked away from James Gunn’s DC universe for a simple reason: the money elsewhere was roughly three times better.
The actor turned down the role of Peacemaker after securing lucrative back-to-back offers to star in Army of the Dead and My Spy. According to 411mania.com, DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn wanted Bautista for the antihero from the start, but studio finances meant DC could only table a fraction of the competing payday.
The Podcast Revelation on Casting Shift
Gunn pulled back the curtain on the near-miss during an appearance on The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon? The Official Podcast. When Bautista opted for the dual-movie payday instead, the director turned immediately to his second choice for the part: John Cena.

That pivot clicked instantly. It birthed a close working relationship between Gunn and Cena, paving the way for a major HBO Max spinoff series.
John Cena Stepping Into the DC Spotlight
The role rapidly transformed Cena into a cornerstone of the franchise. The Suicide Squad hit theaters in July 2021, and its television counterpart debuted the following January.
Momentum only accelerated from there. Cena reprised the character for a cameo in Gunn’s Superman reboot, while Peacemaker returned for a second season.
Building a Flawed Antihero on Screen
Reflecting on the audition process during the podcast, Gunn revealed how quickly his vision for the character expanded. Before the film even premiered in theaters, the director knew he wanted to build an entire television series around the persona.
He described the character as a flawed, half-conservative and half-radical figure where the creative team sought to uncover a hidden core of humanity.

Reuniting for Marvel’s Final Guardians Chapter
Passing on DC did not permanently fracture the creative bond between Bautista and his director. The pair later reunited for the May 2023 release of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
That blockbuster marked a run with the franchise that originally launched Bautista’s acting career as Drax the Destroyer.
