John Cena Announces John Cena Classic Tournament for December
John Cena stepped onto the set of NBC’s TODAY Show on October 5 to deliver a surprise announcement: the inaugural John Cena Classic will launch this December, falling precisely one year after his high-profile retirement match against Gunther.
A Radical Fan-Voted Format
The experimental tournament will feature talent drawn across NXT, Raw, and SmackDown. Yet standard tournament logic does not apply. Match outcomes carry no weight toward advancement or victory, according to reports from Wrestleview and Fightful. Instead, the ultimate champion will be crowned entirely through a public fan vote.
“This year in December, I’m really excited about announcing the John Cena Classic,” Cena said during the morning broadcast, as transcribed by Fightful. “So we’re going to do an event based off of all the memory, all the nostalgia, and the IP and the core values of the character, which is me – hustle, loyalty, respect, perseverance, virtue, overcoming the odds. And giving the vote to the people, our audience is going to decide our champion on that night.”
Scheduling Realities on the WWE Calendar
The December rollout collides with a crowded late-year slate for the promotion. WWE has already locked in its Wrestlepalooza Premium Live Event in Australia for December 12. Operating under a company ambassador contract, Cena is using his institutional ties to push the envelope with the new format.
Even the architect behind the concept remains unsure of its viability. “It’s a really unique live event,” Cena admitted on the TODAY program. “I don’t even know if it’s going to work, but I’m still taking bold chances in the WWE space. And I’m proud to be helping the John Cena Classic.”
