As David Spade’s 2001 feature comedy Joe Dirt marks its 25th anniversary, Fox Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television are developing a follow-up animated series starring Spade, who is slated to voice the iconic title character and executive produce, according to reporting by Deadline.

The Evolution of a Cult Classic Intellectual Property

Twenty-five years after the original Columbia Pictures release hit theaters, the mullet-sporting hero is returning to the screen. According to Deadline, the new animated project finds Joe Dirt twenty-five years later, still keeping on, deeply in love with Brandy, and sporting a skull fused permanently to his signature hairstyle. While managing eternal optimism, Joe faces new stakes as a husband with three teenage daughters, where standard problem-solving tools no longer suffice.

Production Lineup and Prior Adaptation History

The animated series is written by Scott Gairdner, whose credits include directing pre-taped segments for the Academy Awards and Golden Globe Awards, creating Comedy Central’s Moonbeam City, and serving as executive producer on Netflix’s Saturday Morning All Star Hits!. Gairdner is represented by Verve and Ginsburg Daniels Kallis, as noted by Deadline.

Spade executive produces alongside Fred Wolf, who co-wrote the original 2001 film, as well as Doug Robinson and Lauren Moffat of Sony TV-based Doug Robinson Productions. This current venture marks the second attempt at bringing the property to animation. Sony TV previously developed a different animated iteration set up at TBS in 2010, which was written and executive produced by Spade, Wolf, and Donick Carey, with Robinson executive producing in his capacity as Head of TV for Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison. Happy Madison produced both the original film and its 2015 streaming sequel, Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser, which premiered on Sony’s Crackle.

Co-producing the new Fox series are sibling entities Sony Pictures Television and Fox Entertainment.
