Joan Mir Misses Australian MotoGP Due to Illness

Joan Mir Misses Australian MotoGP Due to Illness

October 21, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Joan Mir will miss the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island as his mysterious illness continues to sideline the 2020 MotoGP world champion, as the Honda factory team announced in a press release. The Honda factory team announced that the rider will sit out the upcoming weekend because his medical team deems a return premature, leaving the manufacturer with a severely depleted roster for the race.

Honda Faces Phillip Island With Only Luca Marini

The Honda factory squad is facing an acute staffing shortage at Phillip Island. Joan Mir last participated in a Grand Prix at Misano in early September, and nearly six weeks after his illness was first made public, a precise medical diagnosis remains unannounced. The team stated that Mir’s health condition continues to be observed.

Replacement Dilemma Deepens Factory Woes

Compounding the team’s difficulties, replacement rider Aleix Espargaro cannot step in for the weekend. The 37-year-old veteran recently returned to competition at the Indonesian Grand Prix after missing months due to a severe crash during private preseason tests with the 850cc Honda. Because he suffered from arm-pump issues in Mandalika, Espargaro must undergo a forearm operation in Barcelona in the coming days.

Sidelined Stars Thin Out The Roster

With Takaaki Nakagami also sidelined due to a serious crash during FP1 at his wild-card appearance in Motegi, the Honda factory team enters the Australian weekend with only one rider, regular competitor Luca Marini. Somkiat Chantra, who filled in for Mir in Motegi and was ready after the Superbike season concluded the previous weekend, was not selected as a replacement. Honda did not disclose the reason for passing over Chantra.

Grid Reductions And Substitutions Down Under

The grid on Phillip Island will feature only 19 of the 22 regular 2026 MotoGP riders. Fermin Aldeguer and Toprak Razgatlioglu both suffered injuries during the previous Grand Prix in Mandalika, adding to the weekend’s high attrition rate. Gresini has tapped Iker Lecuona to cover for Aldeguer, while Augusto Fernandez steps in for Razgatlioglu at Pramac.
