Barcelona President Joan Laporta addressed former manager Xavi Hernández’s public support of presidential candidate Victor Font, stating he wasn’t surprised by the endorsement given their past relationship. The comments come as the club prepares for upcoming presidential elections.
Laporta acknowledged Xavi’s freedom to support whomever he chooses, telling RAC1,”I wasn’t surprised that Xavi was there and I thought he was free to do whatever he wants. I’m not surprised because in the past he had a relationship with Victor Font.” He further stated that all Barcelona fans are free to support the candidate of their choice, adding, “All Barça fans can do what they think is appropriate. We’re not in the middle of an election campaign yet, so I won’t comment on everything.”
The president also responded to criticism leveled against those he termed “mestretites” (know-it-alls), clarifying that the remark wasn’t directed at any specific individual. “When I saeid ‘mestretites,’ I didn’t specify names or positions. It was a warning to all those who see Barcelona solely as a business, because those who see it that way have the concept of a limited company in mind. If he felt targeted, there must be a reason.”
Laporta confirmed the elections will be held between March 15 and June 15, with a firm date to be announced soon. He expressed a desire to minimize disruption to the team during the election period, stating, “We will decide as soon as possible and we hope that they hinder the team as little as possible.”
