Michigan Football Adds Transfer Tight End JJ Buchanan, Bolsters Position Group
Ann Arbor, MI – The Michigan Wolverines are continuing to build momentum as they prepare for the 2026 season, and a key addition to their offense has been confirmed: Utah tight end JJ Buchanan will be transferring to Michigan, he announced on social media Sunday, January 11th. This acquisition directly addresses a need within the Wolverines’ tight end room following recent departures and promises to inject significant talent into the passing game.
A Rising Star Joins the Wolverines
Buchanan arrives in Ann Arbor after a standout freshman season with the Utah Utes. The 6-foot-4, 208-pound Nevada native quickly became a reliable target in the Utes’ offense, finishing third on the team in receptions (26), receiving yards (425), and touchdowns (five). Remarkably, Buchanan led all freshmen tight ends nationally in receiving yardage, averaging an extraordinary 16.4 yards per catch. His ability to consistently create separation and make contested catches was on full display, highlighted by a career-long 60-yard reception in a thrilling 51-47 victory over Kansas state.
The addition of Buchanan couldn’t come at a better time for Michigan. The tight end position has been a staple of the Wolverines’ offensive success in recent years, and maintaining that strength is crucial. Though, the departure of Marlin Klein, who declared for the NFL draft, and Brady Prieskorn, who entered the transfer portal, created a void that needed to be filled. Buchanan’s immediate eligibility and proven production make him a prime candidate to step into a significant role.
Following a Familiar Face to Ann Arbor
Buchanan’s decision to transfer to Michigan is also noteworthy due to his relationship with Freddie Whittingham, the Wolverines’ new tight ends coach. Whittingham recently joined Kyle Whittingham’s (no relation) staff, and Buchanan previously played under Freddie at Utah. The trust and rapport already established between player and coach are expected to facilitate a smooth transition and expedite Buchanan’s integration into the Michigan offense.
“It’s a big deal when you can bring a player in who has already built a connection with his position coach,” said former NFL scout and current college football analyst, Charles Davis.“That pre-existing relationship can cut down on the learning curve and allow the player to contribute more quickly. For Buchanan, following Coach Whittingham to Michigan seems like a very comfortable and logical step.”
Michigan’s Tight End Tradition
Michigan has a long and storied history of developing successful tight ends, a reputation that undoubtedly played a role in attracting Buchanan. Historically, the wolverines have utilized tight ends as key components of both their passing and running games. In the 2025 season, U-M tight ends combined for 56 receptions for 604 yards and two touchdowns, demonstrating their consistent involvement in the offense. Buchanan’s addition is expected to elevate the position’s impact even further.
The Wolverines’ offensive scheme, known for its versatility and emphasis on tight end involvement, should provide Buchanan with ample opportunities to showcase his skills. Expect to see buchanan utilized in a variety of ways—as a receiver in the passing game, as a blocker in the running game, and potentially even as a short-yardage receiving threat in the red zone.
Looking Ahead
The arrival of JJ Buchanan represents a significant boost to the Michigan Wolverines’ offensive firepower. His proven ability to make plays, combined with his existing relationship with Coach Whittingham, positions him for immediate success. As Michigan looks to build on its recent achievements and contend for another championship, Buchanan will undoubtedly be a key player to watch. With a strong tight end room now fortified, the Wolverines’ offense is poised to remain a force in the college football landscape.
