Jim Harbaugh’s Player Story: Chargers & March Madness Connection

March 22, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh acknowledged the New England Patriots’ defensive performance following their 16-3 victory in the wild-card playoff game on January 12, 2026, stating the Patriots were a “big factor” in the outcome. The Chargers offense struggled throughout the game, converting only one of ten third-down attempts and allowing six sacks of quarterback Justin Herbert.

The Patriots’ defense limited the Chargers to 207 total yards. Milton Williams and K’Lavon Chaisson each recorded two sacks, contributing to the significant pressure on Herbert. Cornerbacks Christian Gonzalez and Marcus Jones also delivered strong performances in the secondary, effectively shutting down the Chargers’ receiving options.

“They were able to secure the stops—3rd down, redzone,” Harbaugh said after the game. “They played really good situational, played really good coverage. There were some that could have gone either way there and they were able to make the play. But I congratulate them. It was a heck of a game.”

Harbaugh’s comments came after a game where the Chargers’ offensive struggles were particularly evident. The team’s inability to sustain drives and convert on crucial downs proved decisive, allowing the Patriots to control the game’s tempo and ultimately secure the win. The Patriots’ defensive success raises questions about their potential for further advancement in the playoffs.
