Jim Clancy, a former pitcher who debuted with the Toronto Blue Jays during their 1977 expansion season and spent 12 campaigns with the team, has died at the age of 69. The Blue jays confirmed Clancy’s death on Monday via social media. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Clancy was selected by the Toronto club in the sixth round of the 1976 Major League Baseball expansion draft. He made his debut on July 26, 1977, against the Texas Rangers, allowing five earned runs in two innings in a 14-0 loss.

After posting a 4-9 record in the Blue Jays’ inaugural season,Clancy played his frist full season in 1978,finishing with a respectable 10-12 record for a team that ended last in the American League West with a 59-102 record.

Alongside star pitcher Dave Stieb, Clancy was a cornerstone of the Jays’ rotation as the team grew more competitive. He was the Opening Day starter for Toronto in 1981 and again in 1984.

In 1982,Clancy achieved a 16-14 record with a 3.71 earned run average and 139 strikeouts, earning an All-Star selection. That season, the Blue Jays also finished above last place in their division for the first time with a 78-84 record.

Clancy posted a 9-6 record with a 3.78 ERA in 1985, the same year the Jays won their first division title before losing in seven games too the Kansas City Royals in the American League Championship Series.

Following a disappointing 1988 season in Toronto, where he went 11-13 with a 4.49 ERA, Clancy signed with the Houston Astros. The Blue Jays failed to qualify for the postseason that year.

Clancy played his final season as a reliever with the Atlanta Braves in 1991. He recorded his first career playoff victory in Game 3 of the World Series, helping the Braves defeat the Minnesota Twins 5-4 in 12 innings. He finished the series with a 1-0 record and a 4.15 ERA, though the Twins ultimately won the World Series in seven games.
