Jets Bolster Lineup with Veteran Additions
Toews Returns, Nyquist and Pearson Signed for 2025-26 Season
The Winnipeg Jets are gearing up for the upcoming 2025-26 NHL season, making strategic moves in free agency and addressing roster needs following a strong 2024-25 campaign. Key signings aim to bolster the team’s offensive depth and experience.
Veteran Leadership Arrives
Forward Jonathan Toews is set to return for his 17th NHL season, signing a one-year deal with his hometown team. The 37-year-old, a three-time Stanley Cup champion, had stepped away from the sport for health reasons following the 2022-23 season. His comeback adds significant leadership and championship pedigree to the Jets.
Additionally, forward Gustav Nyquist, 35, inked a one-year contract. Nyquist, who posted 75 points two seasons ago, is expected to contribute to the team’s top six. This move helps fill the void left by Nikolaj Ehlers‘ departure in free agency.
Forward Tanner Pearson, 30, also joins the Jets on a one-year deal. Pearson, who tallied 27 points in 78 games for the Vegas Golden Knights last season, is a candidate for a role within the team’s middle six. His acquisition comes as the Jets face uncertainty regarding captain Adam Lowry‘s availability.
Injury Concerns Loom
The Jets’ plans for their forward corps were complicated by the news that captain Adam Lowry underwent hip surgery on May 27. The center is projected to miss the start of the season, with an estimated recovery timeline of five to six months. This absence will likely increase the importance of new acquisitions like Pearson in providing depth.
Team Performance Recap
The Winnipeg Jets had a successful 2024-25 season, finishing first in the Central Division with a 56-22-4 record. However, their playoff run ended in the Western Conference Second Round. The team is looking to build on this success with its refreshed roster.
As of July 2025, the Jets’ offseason moves position them to contend in the Central Division. Their ability to integrate new talent and navigate injuries will be crucial as the season approaches, which is slated to begin on October 7.
