Jeremy Meeks: From ‘Hot Felon’ Mugshot to Modeling & Acting Career
A mugshot taken by the Stockton Police Department in June 2014 transformed Jeremy Meeks from a convicted felon into an international sensation, launching an unexpected career in modeling and acting. The image, posted on the department’s Facebook page during a gang sweep, quickly went viral, earning Meeks the moniker “Hot Felon” and attracting a massive online following.
The arrest stemmed from “Operation Ceasefire,” a multi-agency effort targeting members of the North Side Gangster Crips. On June 18, 2014, officers pulled over Meeks, a known affiliate of the gang, and discovered a loaded .45-caliber handgun with extended magazines in the trunk of his car, along with a 9mm round in the glove box. This violated the terms of his prior felony conviction.
Federal prosecutors subsequently charged Meeks with illegal firearm possession, as the pistol had been transported across state lines. He was convicted in February 2015 and sentenced to 27 months in federal prison, plus mandatory substance abuse treatment. He served 13 months at Mendota Federal Correctional Institution before being released on March 8, 2016, to transitional housing.
Although incarcerated, Meeks reportedly received an overwhelming amount of fan mail – up to 300 letters daily – including explicit photographs and money orders. He later described this support as a source of strength during his time in prison.
The Stockton Police Department’s Facebook post of Meeks’ mugshot quickly amassed tens of thousands of likes and shares. By 2021, the post had garnered 95,000 likes, far surpassing the engagement of any previous police department content. The image’s virality was fueled by Meeks’ striking features and sparked widespread discussion online.
Upon his release, Meeks was scouted by modeling agencies and signed with White Cross Management. He quickly transitioned into a successful modeling career, walking runways for designers like Philipp Plein and Tommy Hilfiger. He also secured acting roles, appearing in films such as True to the Game 2 and Secret Society 3.
Now 41, Meeks continues to work as an actor, with recent credits including Doggmen. He is also a father and has publicly spoken out against gang life. As of March 2026, Meeks has no recent legal issues.
