Jeremy Corbyn to Make Pantomime Debut as ”Wizard of oz-lington” in North London
London, UK – Former Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn will trade the parliamentary benches for the stage this Christmas, appearing in a pantomime production at the Pleasance Theater in Islington, North London. The Islington North MP, now an autonomous, will make an onscreen cameo as the “Wizard of Oz-lington” in Wicked Witches – A Popular Panto!, a drag-inspired take on the Wicked story.
The production marks Pleasance London’s first pantomime in over 20 years and kicks off the theatre’s 30th anniversary celebrations. Corbyn expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “The Pleasance has been at the heart of our community for 30 years, and local theatre like this deserves our support.”
He continued, “Panto brings people together – it’s fun, inclusive and a brilliant party of creativity. it’s a pleasure to conjure up a little festive magic with the Pleasance in their 30th year. Local theatre is where the real wizardry happens - sparking imagination and spreading a bit of joy.”
Ellie Simpson, Head of Theatre at Pleasance London, highlighted Corbyn’s deep connection to the local community, saying, “Jeremy’s as much a part of Islington as the Yellow Brick Road is of Oz – so who better to play the wizard of Oz-lington?” She added that his appearance will “add a touch of local sparkle” to the production.
Wicked Witches – A Popular Panto! promises a “gloriously camp Christmas stunning” featuring cabaret, pop parodies, and “plenty of laughs for those young and old alike.” The theatre advertises audiences can expect ”soaring vocals, sparkly spells, and more sass than you can shake a wand at.”
