JB Pritzker Wins Rare Third Term as Illinois Governor Defeating Darren Bailey

JB Pritzker Wins Rare Third Term as Illinois Governor Defeating Darren Bailey

November 4, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker secured a rare third term, defeating Republican challenger Darren Bailey in a gubernatorial rematch called by the Associated Press immediately after polls closed at 7 p.m. With approximately 85% of unofficial returns counted, Pritzker held 59.6% of the vote compared to Bailey’s 37%, while independent candidate Collin Corbett captured 3.3%.

How the 2026 Rematch Unfolded Across Illinois

The outcome mirrors the 2022 contest where Bailey lost to Pritzker by more than 12 percentage points, The Hill reported. This cycle, however, made Pritzker the first Democrat elected to a third term as Illinois governor, CBS News reported. Pritzker campaigned heavily on his fiscal management, pointing to eight balanced budgets and 12 credit upgrades since taking office. His administration outspent his opponent significantly, dropping more than $38 million by late October, while Bailey spent less than $1 million between July and September.

Bailey, a farmer from downstate Xenia and former state senator, focused his campaign on property taxes, energy costs, and public safety. He spent the final stretch of the race in the Chicago area to peel off suburban voters. Meanwhile, Pritzker appeared across the state alongside his lieutenant governor running mate, Christian Mitchell, who stepped in after former Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton won the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate seat held by the retiring Dick Durbin.

Competing Visions for the Prairie State

The candidates offered starkly different assessments of state government during their WTTW News candidate forum. Pritzker touted his administration’s elimination of the state’s bill backlog and investments in sustainable services. Bailey argued that eight years of incumbent leadership drove up costs and made communities less safe.

Candidate Party Approximate Vote Share
JB Pritzker Democratic 59.6%
Darren Bailey Republican 37.0%
Collin Corbett Independent 3.3%

Collin Corbett entered the race as an independent after leaving the Republican Party earlier in the year. He positioned himself as a fiscal conservative and social moderate focused on working families. Yet the contest remained polarized around national political figures.

Pritzker Victory Reignites 2028 Presidential Bid Speculation

Pritzker’s victory immediately reignited speculation regarding a potential 2028 presidential bid. The billionaire Democrat has established a national profile through frequent clashes with President Donald Trump. During his victory speech, Pritzker emphasized the contrast between hope and fear, telling supporters that the state faces new challenges regarding healthcare, campaign finance, and national political dynamics.

“We climbed one mountain tonight, but we are sitting at the base of another,” Pritzker said during his election night remarks.

Chief of staff Anne Caprara noted that the governor’s national presence serves broader party goals. She told WTTW News that what benefits the country benefits Illinois, pointing to efforts to elect Democrats nationwide and counter the federal administration’s agenda.
