JAY-Z on Money & Morality: ‘Your Dollar Amount Doesn’t Define You’
JAY-Z has defended the wealth of himself and his wife, Beyoncé, asserting that an individual’s character is not determined by their net worth. The comments, made in a new interview with GQ, reach after both artists joined the ranks of billionaires in 2025.
“Your morality defines who you are. Your morality is not defined by a dollar amount,” JAY-Z told the magazine. He questioned the logic of condemning all millionaires, asking, “If it’s a cutoff like ‘all millionaires are bad,’ at $999,000 I’m good?” He emphasized his own path to success, stating he achieved it “the hard way, in spite of the way the system is set up.”
According to Forbes, JAY-Z’s net worth stands at $2.5 billion, while Beyoncé was declared a billionaire with an estimated net worth exceeding $1 billion. The declaration made Beyoncé the fifth musician to reach billionaire status, joining Jay-Z, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, and Bruce Springsteen, Forbes reported in December 2025.
JAY-Z further argued that possessing greater financial resources enables individuals to enact positive change. “A person with more money can do more good. It’s a choice,” he said. He acknowledged the existing societal structures, stating, “We’re living in the real world. You can be realistic or idealistic. This is the system that we have. And with the system that we have, what are you going to do?”
Addressing the public criticism leveled against billionaires, JAY-Z dismissed the notion of “tension” surrounding his wealth. “I got to give you the honest answer: There’s no tension. I don’t give a fuck what you say,” he stated. He characterized the condemnation of wealth as a “cop-out” that avoids addressing systemic issues. “You receive to demonize this group of folks without fixing the actual system that exists, that’s in play,” he said. He added that money may “enhance” or “cause you to act in a way,” but that the underlying behavior would likely exist regardless of financial status.
Dr. Dre recently joined JAY-Z and Beyoncé on Forbes’ 2026 Billionaires List, becoming one of six musicians to achieve that status. Forbes listed Dre as tied for 3332nd on the list, alongside Rihanna and others. The publication likewise noted that Elon Musk remains the world’s richest person, with a net worth of $839 billion.
Beyoncé’s ascent to billionaire status was fueled by the success of her 2023 Renaissance World Tour, which grossed nearly $600 million, and her innovative distribution of the concert film, securing nearly half of its $44 million global box office revenue. Her 2024 album, Cowboy Carter, which won Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards, also contributed significantly to her wealth, generating over $400 million in ticket sales and $50 million in merchandise revenue from the accompanying tour.
