The decision by CBS to cancel “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” has ignited a debate over its motivations, with the network citing financial reasons while critics allege political influence. Colbert, known for his frequent critiques of former president Donald Trump, recently described a settlement involving Trump as a “big fat bribe” during an episode that aired shortly before the cancellation announcement.
Following the news of the cancellation, Trump posted a celebratory message on his Truth Social platform. Colbert responded directly to Trump during his show’s opening monologue, delivering a strong rebuke.

The cancellation has drawn support from fellow late-night hosts and comedians. Jimmy Fallon of “The tonight Show,” Seth Meyers of “Late Night,” John Oliver of “Last Week Tonight,” and Jon Stewart of “The Daily Show” all attended Colbert’s taping on monday as a show of solidarity. Stewart and Oliver have a history with Colbert, having previously worked together on “The Daily Show.”
David Letterman, the creator of “the Late Show” and Colbert’s predecessor as host, has also voiced his disapproval of CBS’s decision. Letterman characterized the cancellation as “pure cowardice” and stated that the network had mistreated colbert, who took over hosting duties in 2015.
