Jay Fulton: Swansea Squad Depth Best Since Premier League Exit
Swansea City Sets Championship Pace
Swansea City sits at the top of the table with 23 points from their opening 10 matches, making it the club’s best start to a season since their relegation from the Premier League in 2018, according to BBC Sport.
The club earned 23 of the 30 points on offer during this opening block of fixtures.
Squad Depth Under Vitor Matos
Midfielder Jay Fulton stated that the current squad depth under manager Vitor Matos is the best it has been since dropping into the second tier over eight years ago.
Fulton, who joined the Swans from Falkirk in January 2014, is contesting his ninth successive campaign with the club.
Matos Uses All Substitution Slots to Boost Goal Tally
Matos has utilized every single one of the 50 substitution slots available to him across the opening 10 games of the 2026-27 season. That heavy rotation matches Bristol City manager Michael Skubala as the only bosses in the division to use their full allotment of substitutes.

The tactical approach has yielded four goals from substitutes so far this campaign, leaving Swansea tied for the second-highest tally of bench-goal contributions in the division.
Inside the Locker Room
“I think so.” Fulton said, according to BBC Sport. “If you look at it on paper, there’s almost two players in every position. The manager rotates the team quite a lot, and the results have kept coming. It feels like a bigger squad; it feels like [there is] a lot more depth and quality. When one player comes out, the next player comes in, and I don’t feel as if there’s been any drawback from it really.”
Looking Ahead in October
The club plays next as the Championship schedule continues through October.
