Jasper County Moves Forward with $320,000 Gift for MercyOne Newton ER Renovation
Newton, IA – Jasper County has formally signaled its commitment to the MercyOne Newton medical Center emergency room renovation project by approving a statement of gift intent for a $320,000 donation. The funds, allocated from the county’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) allocation in 2023, will support a much-needed upgrade to the hospital’s aging emergency department.
Jamey Robinson, Director of the Jasper County Emergency Management Agency, updated the Board of Supervisors on the project’s progress at their August 26th meeting. He confirmed with MercyOne Newton COO Chad Kelley that the project is moving forward and that the ARPA funds will be effectively utilized. The statement of gift intent provides official documentation of the county’s planned contribution.
“Things are progressing,” Robinson told the board. He also noted the hospital intends to recognise the county’s contribution with a plaque in the renovated ER. Importantly, approval of the statement does not constitute immediate payment; Supervisor Brandon Talsma indicated the county will issue the check once construction begins.
The planned renovation addresses critical infrastructure limitations impacting patient care.Built in 1971 and last renovated in 1994, the current ER faces challenges including insufficient treatment and triage space, a lack of negative pressure rooms for infection control, and inadequate exam room sizes. Increasing behavioral health needs and concerns about patient privacy in the cramped layout have further highlighted the necessity for expansion. The ER serves as the sole emergency care provider in Jasper County, handling over 10,000 patient visits annually.
The project, estimated to cost $5 million, has been identified as a top community health priority. The City of Newton has also pledged $50,000 towards the renovation, proposing the contribution in July.County officials emphasized the renovation is an “essential investment” in the health and safety of the community.
The Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the statement of gift intent in a 3-0 vote, solidifying Jasper County’s support for the vital project. The Jasper County EMA will continue to collaborate with MercyOne Newton to ensure the project remains on track and funds are allocated as intended.
