Japan’s Submissive Diplomacy & US Military Demands

March 22, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly pressed Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to increase Japan’s contribution to securing the Strait of Hormuz during a meeting at the White House on March 19, 2026, according to reports from Japanese and South Korean news outlets. The pressure came after Japan signaled its reluctance to commit to a naval deployment, citing constraints within its constitution.

During the summit, Trump emphasized the importance of countries reliant on the Strait of Hormuz for energy imports taking a more direct role in ensuring its safe passage. He specifically called on Japan to “step up” its involvement six times, according to Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper. The repeated request followed Japan’s indication that, although opposing Iran’s potential blockade of the Strait and its nuclear development, a deployment of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces was not feasible under Article 9 of the Japanese constitution, which limits the country’s military capabilities.

The U.S. President, speaking to reporters after the meeting with Takaichi, also highlighted the United States’ support for South Korea, stating, “I love Korea. We have a great relationship with Korea. We support Korea a lot,” in what appeared to be a renewed call for Seoul to contribute to the effort. This followed a similar request for South Korea to take a more active role, as reported by the Korean news agency Hani.

The situation unfolded as the United States seeks to build an international coalition to safeguard maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil supplies. Japan’s hesitation adds complexity to those efforts. While Japan has expressed opposition to Iran’s actions, it has stopped short of committing military assets.

The Japanese government has joined a G7 statement criticizing Iran’s threats to the Strait of Hormuz, but has maintained a position of “strategic ambiguity” regarding direct military support. According to KBS News, Japan is communicating potential contributions to the U.S., with one possibility being the deployment of mine-sweeping vessels following a potential conflict.

The pressure on Japan comes amid a broader U.S. Effort to share the burden of security responsibilities in the region. Trump has consistently called on allies to increase their defense spending and contribute more actively to maintaining regional stability. The White House has also used the presence of U.S. Troops stationed in Japan as leverage in discussions about contributions to regional security.
