Japan Invests $109bn in US Under Trump – Trade Deal Outlier

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi complimented President Donald Trump’s son, Barron Trump, on his upcoming 20th birthday during a White House dinner Thursday evening, calling him a “highly tall, good-looking gentleman.” The remark came during a formal dinner hosted by President Trump, marking Takaichi’s first visit to the White House since assuming office in October.

“I know he has grown up so much into a very tall, good-looking gentleman,” Takaichi said, according to a statement released by USA Today. “As I see you Donald, it is very clear where he got it. His parents, of course.” Barron Trump will turn 20 on Friday, March 20.

The dinner concluded a day of meetings between Takaichi and President Trump, during which the two leaders discussed a range of issues, including regional security concerns and economic cooperation. Takaichi reportedly told President Trump that the world is facing a “very severe security environment” due to the ongoing U.S.-Israel war on Iran and warned of a potential “huge hit” to the global economy. Despite these concerns, she emphasized the importance of the U.S.-Japan alliance and asserted that only President Trump “can achieve peace throughout the world.”

President Trump, in turn, described Takaichi as “a great friend and partner” and stated they had become “very close.” He did not directly address Takaichi’s concerns regarding Iran, but indicated that Japan’s assistance would be “appropriate” given its reliance on oil transported through the Strait of Hormuz.

Beyond the security discussions, Takaichi announced Japan’s commitment to gifting Washington, D.C. An additional 250 cherry trees to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States. She also highlighted the strength of the economic relationship between the two countries, noting that Japanese financing and investment in the U.S. Has reached $109 billion, exceeding that of other nations with trade agreements with the U.S.

The prime minister also remarked on the upcoming Freedom 250 Grand Prix, a race scheduled to take place on the National Mall as part of the anniversary celebrations, expressing excitement about the event and the participation of both Chevrolet and Honda racing teams.

The meeting took place against a backdrop of ongoing tensions in the Middle East and global economic uncertainty. No public statement was released regarding a specific commitment from Japan to assist the U.S. In the conflict with Iran, and the two leaders did not hold a joint press conference following their discussions.
