Japan Intercepts Russian IL‑20 Spy Aircraft Near Western Approaches
Japan’s Defense ministry confirmed a russian IL-20 intelligence aircraft flew near its western approaches on January 23. Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi released a statement on Friday detailing the flight path.
The Russian aircraft originated from the Asian continent and entered the Sea of Japan. It then proceeded southwest before altering its course off the japanese coast, according to Koizumi.Japanese Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) aircraft scrambled to monitor the Russian plane’s activity.
This isn’t the first time Russia has conducted such surveillance flights near Japan. Similar incidents have occurred in the past, prompting responses from the JASDF.
