Janusz Ratajczak: Opera Singer Dies in Car Accident Near Bydgoszcz

Janusz Ratajczak, a renowned tenor and longtime soloist with the Opera Nova in Bydgoszcz, Poland, died Wednesday, March 23, 2026, in a traffic accident on National Road 10 near Przyłubie, according to multiple reports.

Ratajczak, described by colleagues as a vital part of the Opera Nova’s musical community, was killed when his vehicle left the roadway, according to a report from Fakt newspaper. Details surrounding the accident remain limited.

The Opera Nova announced Ratajczak’s death on its website, stating the loss was “unbelievable.” The company noted that Ratajczak had been with the opera for decades, debuting as a student in Stanisław Moniuszko’s “Flis” and going on to perform over 50 roles with the company, including Stefan in “The Haunted Manor,” Jontek in “Halka,” Alfred in “La Traviata,” Cavaradossi in “Tosca,” and Lensky in “Eugene Onegin.”

“The public loved him for something more than just a beautiful voice. For truth. For the fact that every role was lived, not just sung,” the Opera Nova stated. “We knew that behind all this were kindness, genuine commitment and a heart.”

Ratajczak’s career began whereas he was a student at the Music Academy in Bydgoszcz. He found both professional and personal fulfillment in the city, meeting his wife, Małgosia, while performing at the Opera Nova. The couple celebrated 30 years of artistic collaboration on the opera’s stage.

News of Ratajczak’s death has prompted an outpouring of grief from the Polish cultural community. WP Kultura described the loss as “a huge loss for our environment.”

Authorities have not released further details regarding the circumstances of the accident as of Wednesday evening.
