Janson Baker Testimony: Maintains Innocence in 2019 Dieppe Deaths
Janson Baker, accused of the 2019 double murder of Bernard and Rose-Marie Saulnier, concluded his testimony Wednesday, steadfastly denying any involvement in their deaths. Baker, 29, told the Moncton Court of King’s Bench he “did not kill Rose-Marie, [and] did not kill Bernard Saulnier,” repeatedly asserting, “I am not a killer,” according to reports from CBC News.
The Crown alleges the Saulniers were victims of collateral damage in a targeted hit on their son, Sylvio Saulnier, stemming from a dispute with a drug trafficking ring. Prosecutor Brad Burgess told the court the couple died as a result of retribution for Sylvio’s alleged betrayal of the ring, as reported by Global News. Burgess identified Jesse Todd Logue and Nicholas Daniel Bain as members of the trafficking ring involved in the alleged conspiracy to murder Sylvio Saulnier.
Baker’s testimony, which began earlier this week, initially focused on his personal life, including his passion for sports and rap music, and the meaning behind his tattoos. He explained a “Fearless” tattoo above his right eyebrow represents his rap name, and a “family” tattoo on his right forearm signifies the importance of his family, with several family members present in the courtroom during his testimony.
The trial, which began seven weeks ago, has revealed that Baker was already an inmate at the Atlantic Institution, a maximum-security facility in Renous, New Brunswick, when charges were laid in 2023 – four years after the deaths of Bernard, 78, and Rose-Marie Saulnier, 74. Five individuals have now been charged in connection with the 2019 double homicide, including Baker, Logue, Bain, Christopher Allen Lennon, and Monique Alicia Boyer, according to CTV News. All five are also charged with conspiracy to murder Sylvio Saulnier.
Sylvio Saulnier died in 2023, but authorities have stated his death was not the result of criminal activity. The Crown’s case centers on the assertion that the Saulniers were unintentionally killed during an attempt to reach their son. The trial continues, with the defence expected to present further evidence.
