Jannik Sinner: Masters 1000 Record & Miami Open Quarter-Finals Run

March 25, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Jannik Sinner continued his dominant run at the Miami Open, extending his record for consecutive sets won at ATP Masters 1,000 events to 28 with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) victory over Alex Michelsen on Wednesday. The Italian world number two advanced to the quarter-finals, where he will face Frances Tiafoe.

Sinner surpassed Novak Djokovic’s previous benchmark of 24 consecutive sets won on Monday, a record the Serbian had held for ten years. The streak began at the Paris Masters in November, where Sinner lifted the trophy without dropping a set, and continued through his undefeated run at Indian Wells earlier this month. He has now won the past two Masters 1,000 tournaments without losing a single set.

Wednesday’s match against Michelsen proved a tougher test than earlier rounds. Sinner found himself trailing 5-2 in the second set before mounting a comeback, ultimately securing the set in a tiebreak. “I’m particularly happy, but in the same time I don’t play for this,” Sinner said after his initial record-breaking win against Corentin Moutet, according to Tennis Channel. “Everything can happen. This sport is so unpredictable, so we attempt to keep the tension very high as much as we can, and then we see what’s coming in the next round.”

Djokovic established the previous record of 24 consecutive sets won during the 2016 Sunshine Swing at Indian Wells and Miami. Carlos Alcaraz currently holds the third-longest streak at 21 sets, according to reporting from SI.com. Sinner’s current form positions him as a strong contender for the Sunshine Double, having already demonstrated success on hard courts during this year’s Sunshine Swing.

Sinner’s victory over Moutet on Monday, which initiated the record-breaking streak, was a straight-sets affair, 6-1, 6-4. He will now face 19th-seeded Frances Tiafoe in the quarter-finals, seeking to continue his impressive form and advance further in the tournament.
