James Van Der Beek: Family Fundraiser & Celebrity Support

February 13, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Steven Spielberg has donated $25,000 to a GoFundMe campaign established for the family of the late actor James Van Der Beek, according to multiple news reports. The fundraiser, launched following Van Der Beek’s unexpected death, has surpassed €1.7 million in donations, according to RTE.ie.

Van Der Beek, best known for his role as Dawson Leery in the 1998-2003 television series Dawson’s Creek, died earlier this month. The GoFundMe campaign was initiated to support his wife and children. Spielberg’s contribution was highlighted by both People magazine and USA Today, with Entertainment Weekly noting the significance of the donation given Spielberg’s role as a cinematic hero within the narrative of Dawson’s Creek.

Katie Holmes, a co-star of Van Der Beek’s on Dawson’s Creek, publicly shared a heartfelt message following his death, describing his journey as that of “a hero,” as reported by WAFB. Alfonso Ribeiro, another actor who shared a close relationship with Van Der Beek, posted a photograph of their last moment together, expressing his grief and loss, according to People.

The Irish Times published an obituary characterizing Van Der Beek as a “teenage heart-throb” who embraced life with a “jump in with both feet” attitude. The outpouring of support from fellow actors and fans underscores the impact Van Der Beek had on those who knew him and his audience.
