James Milner: From Leeds Fan to Premier League Record Holder – Exclusive Interview

March 21, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

James Milner, the Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder, has become the Premier League’s all-time leading appearance maker, surpassing Gareth Barry’s previous record of 653 games. Milner reached the milestone during Brighton’s match against Brentford on Saturday, March 15, 2026, taking his total to 655 appearances over a 24-year career in the English top flight.

The 40-year-traditional’s longevity and versatility have been hallmarks of his career, having played for Leeds United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and now Brighton. He has featured in multiple positions, including wing, midfield, and full-back, demonstrating a commitment to adapting to the needs of his team.

“People joke that I only did it because he didn’t do his homework,” said former Premier League referee Jon Moss, who once sent Milner off whereas teaching him at Westbrook Lane Primary School in Leeds. Moss recounted the incident, noting the irony of a teacher dismissing a former pupil in a professional match.

Milner’s achievement has drawn widespread praise, with Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler highlighting his impact on the team’s mentality. “He is a driver of this winning mentality and I consider it’s exceptionally important to have these kind of players in the squad,” Hurzeler stated. “They know how to win, they know what it needs to win.”

The midfielder’s journey began with Leeds United, where he made his Premier League debut in 2002, shortly after completing his GCSEs. He recalls a formative footballing memory of watching Leeds win the First Division title in 1991-92, an experience shared with his father. “My dad picking me up in the lounge and throwing me round and saying: ‘Enjoy it – it might never happen again in your lifetime’,” Milner remembered.

His early experiences included a challenging start with Westbrook Juniors, where his team lost a game 16-2, playing on a full-size pitch. He was later scouted by Leeds at the age of nine, an opportunity he initially hadn’t envisioned for himself. “Until that point as a kid, I’d never really thought about being a footballer,” Milner explained. “It never crossed my mind that I could actually do it myself.”

Milner’s first training session with the Leeds reserves brought a moment of awe, sharing the pitch with experienced players like David Batty. He quickly progressed to the first team, experiencing the intensity of professional football firsthand. He recounted breaking his nose during a training session at age 16, a baptism of fire that underscored the demands of the game. Senior players like Danny Mills, Gary Kelly, Mark Viduka, and Alan Smith provided guidance and support during his early years.

Milner fondly remembered looking up to Alan Smith, a fellow academy graduate who made an immediate impact at Anfield. Leeds’ academy had a strong track record of producing talented players, including Harry Kewell, Jonathan Woodgate, Paul Robinson, and Smith.

Reflecting on his early success, Milner acknowledged the rapid transition from schoolboy to professional footballer. “I gaze back now and you think how young you were,” he said. “Three, four months before, I’d been doing my GCSEs and my mates were still in sixth form and coming to watch at Elland Road.” He scored on his Premier League debut and again two days later, marking a promising start to his career.
