James Bond at Checkpoint Charlie: Stasi Files Reveal 1982 ‘Octopussy’ Filming
East German secret police, the Stasi, meticulously documented the filming of the 1983 James Bond film Octopussy in Berlin, even recording instances where a vehicle portraying 007 briefly crossed the border into East Germany, according to recently released files.
The surveillance operation centered on Checkpoint Charlie, the most famous border crossing between East and West Berlin during the Cold War. The film’s plot, involving a plot to destroy a NATO base and trigger disarmament, unfolded against the backdrop of the heavily guarded inner-German border. On August 10, 1982, the Stasi focused its attention on the production as it filmed scenes near the Friedrich/Zimmerstrasse border crossing.
Stasi records detail the arrival of twelve vehicles at the crossing point between 7:30 am and 8:30 am. The agents observed the camera crew preparing to film, noting that “At 8.15 a.m., three men with two cameras and a handcart with boxes they had taken from the Mercedes buses walked down Kochstraße to the right.” Kochstrasse was a particularly sensitive location, housing the offices of foreign intelligence agencies.
The surveillance reports indicate filming took place from four locations between 9:34 am and 11:25 am. However, the Stasi also documented an unusual event: a black Mercedes, used in the film, crossed the state border four times, penetrating up to five meters into East German territory. The documents reveal that the Stasi initially considered this a border violation.
The situation was defused when a diplomat informed the Stasi that a film shoot was underway. This allowed the production to continue without incident. The Stasi noted that the filming concluded at 1:33 pm and that the activity had “no impact on cross-border travel.”
The incident highlights the tense atmosphere of the Cold War and the Stasi’s intense scrutiny of activities near the border. Octopussy, which starred Roger Moore as James Bond, was one of the first major Western productions to film in divided Berlin, and its presence attracted the attention of East German authorities. The film also utilized locations in India and London.
