James Anderson has not confirmed retirement after Lancashire exit
James Anderson has not confirmed his retirement from cricket despite being released by Lancashire, stating that his departure from the county he joined in 2001 was not his choice.
Lancashire Exit and the Decision to Rebuild
England’s all-time leading wicket-taker was informed last Monday that he will not be offered a new contract for the 2027 season, according to BBC Sport. The 44-year-old seamer, who turns 45 next year, had planned to continue playing through the 2027 summer.
In his first public comments since the announcement, Anderson wrote on Instagram that the conclusion to his tenure at Old Trafford was outside his control. “If it was up to me it wouldn’t have ended like this, but I wish the players and fans all the best for the future,” he posted.

Lancashire released their own statement detailing the decision alongside Anderson’s social media post on Sunday. The Red Rose finished second-bottom in Division Two of the County Championship last season, prompting leadership changes that brought in new chief executive Richard Kenyon and director of cricket Paul Farbrace.
Farbrace outlined a strategy to overhaul the men’s squad with the target of securing promotion from Division Two and eventually contending for the Division One title within three to four years. “I spoke to Jimmy about our ambitions to rebuild our men’s squad that is capable of securing promotion from Division Two of the County Championship and then challenging to win Division One over the next three to four years,” Farbrace stated regarding the conversation.
“We are keen to begin that rebuild now, both in terms of the playing squad and the wider professional cricket set-up, and to make important progress over the coming months. As part of those plans, I informed Jimmy that we had taken the incredibly difficult decision not to extend his playing contract for the 2027 season,” Farbrace added.
Options Beyond Old Trafford
Despite the end of his long association with Lancashire, Anderson’s playing career remains active in principle. BBC Sport learned that other counties hold an interest in signing the veteran seam bowler for future fixtures.
