JAL and ANA to Raise International Fuel Surcharges for November and December
Japan Airlines Co and All Nippon Airways Co announced plans to raise international fuel surcharges for tickets issued across November and December, setting the rate for North American and European routes at 62,000 yen one-way. The adjustment responds to persistent fuel price elevation driven by ongoing instability in the Middle East.
The upcoming November and December rate represents the second-highest surcharge level recorded by the carriers. It follows a brief period of moderation during the previous two months. Surcharges for North American and European itineraries had dropped for tickets issued in September and October. That temporary relief followed a decline in aviation fuel costs after a preliminary agreement between the United States and Iran in mid-June. Those earlier decreases brought September and October fees down from a record peak of 65,000 yen registered during July and August.

Fuel surcharges are adjusted bimonthly based on Singapore kerosene market prices and prevailing currency exchange rates. Kerosene prices averaged 25,089 yen per barrel during the August and September calculation window, marking an increase of nearly 4,000 yen over the June and July period. The calculated increases incorporate burden-reduction offsets from the Japanese government’s price-surge mitigation program, which provides emergency subsidies for aviation fuel.
Route Comparisons Across Carriers
While both airlines share parallel pricing structures for long-haul destinations, specific adjustments vary by route and carrier. For flights connecting Japan to China and Taiwan, All Nippon Airways will increase its surcharge by 800 yen to reach 15,100 yen. Japan Airlines will raise its levy for the same markets by 3,600 yen to land at 16,000 yen.
Surcharges for South Korean routes will climb to 7,100 yen for both operators. All Nippon Airways implements an increase of 600 yen for South Korea, while Japan Airlines raises its fee by 1,200 yen. Additional regional brackets place Hawaii itineraries at 38,500 yen, Southeast Asian routes at 32,000 yen, and Vietnam or Philippines services at 21,500 yen.
| Destination Route | JAL Surcharge (Nov–Dec) | ANA Surcharge (Nov–Dec) |
|---|---|---|
| North America / Europe | 62,000 yen | 62,000 yen |
| Hawaii / India / Indonesia | 38,500 yen | 38,500 yen |
| China / Taiwan / Hong Kong | 16,000 yen | 15,100 yen |
| South Korea | 7,100 yen | 7,100 yen |
Outlook for Future Pricing Adjustments
Because carriers calculate these fees every two months using trailing market averages, tickets issued from January 2027 onward remain subject to further modification. Continued volatility in crude oil markets and foreign exchange fluctuations will dictate whether levies increase or recede at the start of the next calendar year. Long-haul travelers booking round-trip itineraries to Europe or North America will face surcharge totals exceeding 120,000 yen independent of base airfares.
