Retzlaff Finds New Home, Faith Flourishes at Tulane

Former BYU Quarterback Embraces Diverse Campus and New Nicknames

Former BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff is making waves at Tulane University, finding a warm welcome and a stronger connection to his Jewish faith on the New Orleans campus.

A Fresh Start in the Big Easy

Retzlaff, who recently transferred to Tulane, is adapting to a distinctly different environment than his previous home at Brigham Young University. He’s already picking up new, playful monikers like “Kosher Cannon” and “Shabbat Shotgun” from the substantial Jewish student population, a stark contrast to his previous experience as one of very few Jewish students at BYU.

The move comes after a turbulent period for the quarterback, which included being named in a civil sexual assault lawsuit that has since been dismissed. Retzlaff spoke about his time at BYU, stating it was an “amazing place” that helped him grow both on and off the field, even strengthening his faith due to the university’s faith-oriented atmosphere.

Embracing the Next Chapter

While Retzlaff declined to discuss the specifics of his departure from BYU, he expressed his focus on his new role. I’m just worried about where my feet are. I’m just worried about this next chapter, being at Tulane, winning football games. he stated.

Tulane coach Jon Sumrall confirmed that the university thoroughly vetted Retzlaff before his transfer. The competition for the starting quarterback position is fierce, with three other transfer quarterbacks also vying for the role. None of them were promised anything in regards to who’s going to start. Sumrall added.

Retzlaff, a graduate transfer, chose to join Tulane as a walk-on, prioritizing long-term success over immediate financial gain. He sees this as an opportunity to prove himself. I know that I’m going to get what I deserve, hopefully, at the next level. If that means sacrificing a little bit of money on my side (now) .. so what? Let’s go win football games. he explained.

Adjusting to a New Climate and Culture

The transition to New Orleans has also been a physical one for Retzlaff, who finds the summer heat and humidity a significant change from Utah’s climate. I’m soaked right now. I haven’t sweat this much in my life. he commented after practice.

However, the cultural shift is one he welcomes wholeheartedly. With approximately 40% of Tulane’s student body identifying as Jewish, Retzlaff finds the environment incredibly appealing. It’s a cool deal. It’s so opposite. My faith is super important to me. So, that fact just made it that much sweeter to come here. he said.

The team’s camaraderie has also been a positive factor, with Retzlaff actively seeking to bond with his new teammates by sharing meals. Tulane’s football program has a recent history of success, reaching three consecutive American Conference title games.

As Tulane prepares for its season opener against Northwestern on August 30, the starting quarterback position remains undecided, with Coach Sumrall even considering playing multiple quarterbacks. Regardless of the outcome, Retzlaff is ready for the challenge. No matter what, this is a new chapter in my life. I’m excited to attack it and make the most of it. he concluded.
