jakarta Bolsters Fire Safety with Volunteer Training & Challenge
Jakarta, Indonesia – The DKI Jakarta Province is actively working to improve fire safety through enhanced training and skill development for volunteer firefighters and emergency response teams in buildings. A recent initiative, the Jakarta fire Safety Challenge 2025, brought together over 1,900 participants – 440 volunteer firefighters from 44 sub-district teams and 1,456 personnel from 112 companies – to hone their skills in fire prevention and response.
The challenge focused on practical skills like extinguishing fires using fire extinguishers (APAR), hydrants, and even conventional methods like wet towels. The goal, as stated by a ministry official, is to ensure that individuals “don’t panic and know what to do in the event of a fire.”
The drive to improve fire safety is fueled by concerning statistics. As of September 2025, Jakarta has recorded 1,195 fire incidents, predominantly in densely populated residential areas, buildings, and industrial zones. While 267 of these fires were successfully managed by the community, officials recognize the need for betterment in fire prevention programs, functioning fire protection systems, and a skilled workforce capable of early-stage fire suppression.
Motivations for Volunteering
The commitment of volunteer firefighters is driven by both a sense of responsibility and a desire to contribute to the community. One volunteer, initially involved through his neighborhood association, found his role evolving into a passion for firefighting. Another, 20-year-old Galih Prayogo, explained his motivation: “I am not yet able to help people with material support. So I compensate with my labor.” Galih highlighted the importance of rapid response in areas like Cilandak, South Jakarta, where short circuits are a common cause of fires.
Governor’s Support & Future Focus
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung is a strong advocate for the Jakarta Fire Safety Challenge, emphasizing its role in preventing and addressing fires at an early stage. He expressed gratitude for the community’s success in managing nearly a quarter of reported incidents and urged continued efforts to improve fire handling speed, safety, and effectiveness.
The Jakarta Fire Safety Challenge represents a crucial step in building a more resilient and prepared city, empowering both volunteer firefighters and building managers to effectively mitigate the risks posed by fire hazards. The initiative underscores the importance of proactive measures to address unresolved issues in fire prevention and protection systems throughout Jakarta.
