Jakarta Fires: 25% Extinguished by Residents & Volunteers

Jakarta, Indonesia ⁤ – The DKI Jakarta Province is actively working to improve fire safety through enhanced training and skill development ‌for volunteer firefighters and‌ emergency ⁤response teams in buildings. A recent⁣ initiative, the Jakarta fire Safety ‍Challenge 2025,⁢ brought⁢ together over 1,900 participants – ⁣440 volunteer firefighters‍ from 44 sub-district ⁤teams and 1,456 personnel ⁣from 112 companies‌ – to ‌hone ⁤their ‍skills ⁢in fire prevention and​ response.

The challenge focused on ‍practical skills ⁢like extinguishing ​fires using fire ⁤extinguishers (APAR), hydrants, ‍and even conventional methods like ‍wet towels. The goal, ‍as stated by a ⁢ministry official, is to ensure that individuals “don’t panic and know what to do in the event of a ⁤fire.”

The drive to improve fire safety​ is fueled‌ by concerning statistics.As​ of September 2025, Jakarta has recorded 1,195 fire incidents, predominantly in densely populated ⁣residential areas, buildings, ‍and industrial zones. While ⁤267 of these fires​ were successfully managed by the community, officials ‌recognize the need for betterment in fire prevention programs, functioning fire protection‍ systems, and a⁣ skilled workforce capable of early-stage fire suppression.

Motivations for Volunteering

The commitment⁣ of volunteer firefighters ⁢is driven by​ both a ‌sense of responsibility‌ and a desire to​ contribute to the community. ​ One ‍volunteer, initially involved through his neighborhood ⁣association, found his role ⁣evolving into‌ a passion for firefighting. Another, 20-year-old Galih Prayogo, explained his motivation: “I am not yet able to help people with material support.So ⁣I ‌compensate⁣ with my labor.” Galih highlighted⁤ the importance of ‌rapid response in areas like‍ Cilandak, South Jakarta, ⁢where short circuits are a common cause​ of fires.

Governor’s Support & Future Focus

Jakarta ⁤Governor⁢ Pramono​ Anung is a strong ⁢advocate for the Jakarta Fire Safety Challenge, emphasizing its role in preventing and addressing fires at⁢ an early stage. He expressed gratitude for the community’s success‍ in managing nearly a quarter of reported incidents and ⁣urged continued⁣ efforts to⁣ improve ⁣fire handling speed, safety, and effectiveness.
